Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) was a Norwegian explorer of Greenland and the Arctic Islands. From the Arctic Bibliography, “Retrospective account of the author’s first trip to the Arctic in the sealer Viking 1882, to study animal life and the physical features of the Arctic Sea ... in the Denmark Strait.”

Nansen was the “Dean” of polar travel and many of the polar explorers, such as Amundsen, Scott, Shackleton and others came to him for counsel and support.
