Auguste Duhaut-Cilly [1790-1849] after serving in Napoleon’s navy, he was hired in 1826 as captain of the Heros to trade merchandise on the west coast of North and South America for furs to sell in China at a high profit. Unfortunately, the merchandise was not well selected and it took two years of travel up and down the coast, and two trips to the Hawaiian Is. to sell. During that time he visited nearly all of the ports, missions, presidios and pueblos in California. As a Catholic, he was welcomed by the Franciscan friars and able to see places and talk about topics that were not accessible to British or American captains. He was a keen observer and recorded his observations in detail. They were published in 1834 in France and 1841 in Italy. This is the first complete English translation from the French edition [see Hill 500 and 501, Zamorano 31 and 31A].
