Mary Hunter Austin (1868-1934) was a western writer with settings in California and New Mexico. She is best known for her works on the California desert landscape in The Land of Little Rain (19030) and other writings on Native American culture, literature and mysticism. She was also active in the California artist community of Carmel and Greenwich Village.
