William Henry Brewer (1828-1910) was a botanist and explorer that worked for the California Geological Survey on the first survey of the State in 1860 to 1864. He later was the Chair of Agriculture at the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University. William Alsup, walked the same areas as Brewer and produced the photographs to accompany the journal in this book.
