This book follows William Swain's journey from Buffalo to California. Based on his diary, but with extensive notes and bibliography of sources that supplemented the diary. A very good source of the California Gold Rush.

Holliday drew heavily from the many primary and secondary sources of more than 500 diaries and letters. William Swain’s diary of his travel from Youngstown, New York to the gold fields of California is the focus of the book. And he uses other personal narratives to describe life in San Francisco, Sacramento and other mining towns, sailing to and from California around Cape Horn and across the Isthmus of Panama.
