This article was issued before Mawson's Aurora, under the command of Captain J. K. Davis, left Hobart, Tasmania on December 2,1911. The purpose of the article was to describe the Australasian Antarctic Expedition objectives and science programs in a little known area of Antarctica. Another purpose was to raise addition funding in England for the expedition. The Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-1914 set out to explore the Antarctic coast land south of Australia known as Adelie and Queen Mary Lands, and was successful in exploring new lands, recording extreme weather conditions, and gathering scientific data. Mawson wrote "The Home of the Blizzard" issued in 1915, which during the war, had limited publishing success. He was the only survivor of the Eastern survey party and his struggle is a harrowing Southern sledging journey that Mertz and Ninnis died and Mawson was barely able to survive.
