Archer Butler Hulbert (1873-1933) was historical geographer, author and professor of American History that wrote extensively on American history of the West. The 1931 first edition was very popular, won a cash prize, and republished four times. This revised 1949 Centennial edition includes an introduction by Joseph Henry Jackson, literary editor of the San Francisco Chronicle. The book uses diaries and letters of Forty-Niners from Independence to Hangtown [Placerville] to describe a “typical” journey across the plains, mountains and deserts to California. It is a scholarly work that combines events and stories to give the reader a more complete picture of travel to California.
