A sketch of Sam Brannan (1819-1889) was a major character in the early days of San Francisco and California. A true adventurer, racketeer, entrepreneur, scoundrel and founder of Calistoga, the first spa resort in Northern California. He was also the founder of the first newspaper in San Francisco, The Californian Star. In 1846, he was part of the California revolt from Mexico and to secure the City for the United States. During the early days of the gold rush, he helped to organize the lawless boom town of San Francisco and was elected as Acalde (Mayor & Justice) and Sacramento.
