Joseph E. Ware published The Emigrant’s Guide to California in 1849. In the introduction to this reprint Princeton edition, John Caughey wrote that “Joseph E. Ware was the first to attempt a complete description of the best route for the forty-niners.” Ware did not make the journey himself and wrote the guide primarily from Fremont’s reports. He also included information on the Isthmus of Panama route, gold detection tests and distances.
