The story of upper Napa County is also the long and colorful story of Samuel Brannan. He lead the Mormon Battalion to San Francisco in 1849 to explore establishment of a Mormon community in California only to discover the beginnings of the Gold Rush in progress. He stayed in San Francisco to manage the Mormon interests while the battalion went to the foothills and established one of the first organized mining camps of Mormon Diggings. Brannan became deeply involved with the development of San Francisco and was one of the first Mayors of the City. He became a millionaire and established in upper Napa Valley the first hot springs resort community of Calistoga.
