Captain James D. Winchester caught the Alaskan gold fever and joined the Lynn Mining Company in 1897. Typical of the mining companies of the California gold rush 50 years earlier, the Lynn company bought a schooner and sailed to San Francisco through the Straits of Magellan and then took a steamer to Seattle, a barque to Alaska and then paddlewheel to St. Michaels and then up the Yukon river. The book is a delightful read of the mining adventures on the lower Yukon. Winchester returned to Massachusetts by way of the Great Northern Railroad in 1899.
