With the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867, the Revenue Cutter Service (now the US Coast Guard) began voyages and surveys of Alaska with the Steamer 'Lincoln'. The US Thomas Corwin began regular cruises to the Arctic Ocean and Alaskan waters in 1880 from the San Francisco home port. She participated in the search for the USS Jeannette, rescues of shipwrecked whalers, explorations and support of local Inuit natives.
