Robert Peary [1856-1920] was an active arctic explorer from 1886 in visits and six organized expeditions to Greenland and the Arctic islands. This is a narrative of his fifth expedition and first attempt to reach the North Pole using the "Peary System" His ship, the Roosevelt, traveled through the Smith Sound - Robeson Channel to Cape Sheridan on North Ellesmere Is. to set up winter quarters. He apparently reached 87 30' which was not confirmed by navigation or diary notes. On the return trip he discovered Cape Colgate and claimed to see "Crocker Land" to the north west. Again notes from his diary dispute that claim and in other expeditions and flights, the land was nonexistent.
