Helen Hunt Jackson (1830-1885) was an American poet, writer and activist in the treatment of Native Americans. This novel was published in 1884 to highlight the continuing impacts of the California missions on the Native Americans. Instead, it was seen as a nostalgic historic romance novel that grew into a tourist attraction. From the Volkmann Collection catalogue, "In summarizing the importance of Jackson's novel, Lawrence Clark Powell wrote: 'Ramona was the first novel about Southern California. Today, nearly a century after its publication, it remains the best California book of it kind ..."

In the Volkmann Collection catalogue, Gary Kurutz discusses noteworthy later editions with illustrations and points out "... the Pasadena edition (1902) with photographic illustrations by A.C. Vroman, the noted amateur photographer."
