Thomas Moran and William Henry Holmes. #518 of 1500 limited copies [11.5x9in, Atlas folio 20x17in]; Book volume- [i-vi], vii-xxii, 264 pp., [1] limitation, 42 plates, including frontispiece color illustration of Smithsonian Butte by W H Homes (3 color, 8 double pages) of illustrations and images, many charts, illustrations and sketches in text, introduction by Wallace Stegner, index; Atlas volume- 23 loose folio sheets (19.5x16in folded, 32x19.5in opened), list of sheets, 22 color and half toned panoramic illustrations of Grand Canyon District views by Dutton; Book volume has tan buckram cloth covers quarter bound with Moroccan leather spine with gilt lettering, light brown end papers, all edges trimmed; Cream slipcase for book with brown lettering and half-toned bordered illustrations on recto and verso; Atlas volume has same binding and lettering as book; Book is in fine condition with negligible shelf wear, prior owner ink signature on front end paper, slipcase has some shelf wear with age toning, soiling, and water stains along edges, a few small chips and wear to the edges; Atlas volume is in near fine condition except for slight wear to top and bottom of spine, prior owner ink signature on end paper, two small splits and small chip missing on back edge of spine, minor soiling to back cover, slipcase for Atlas is in poor condition with some soiling and water stains to surfaces, slipcase binding has failed and will need repair. Clarence Edward Dutton (1841-1912) was an American Geologist and US Army officer. In 1875, he began work as a geologist with the United States Geological Survey. He worked with John Wesley Powell, G.K. Gilbert and William Henry Holmes on a number of assignments. Dutton worked in the Rocky Mountains, the Southwest and Pacific coasts. From 1877 to 1880 studied the Grand Canyon area to follow up on Powell's 1870's Colorado River surveys. This book is known for the science, illustrations, and the literary prose in the writing and naming of Grand Canyon features. This is a near fine reprint of the rare 1882 edition including the separate Atlas volume.

William Henry Holmes (1846-1933) was an explorer, anthropologist, archaeologist, artist, scientific illustrator, cartographer, mountain climber, geologist and museum curator; a remarkable and varied life. From the Smithsonian, " In 1880 Holmes worked with Major Clarence E. Dutton, preparing highly detailed topographical drawings of the Grand Canyon region for Dutton’s Tertiary History of the Grand Cañon District (1882). Holmes later worked in the Field Museum of Natural History and taught anthropology at the University of Chicago. He then directed the Bureau of American Ethnography and National Gallery of Art (now the Smithsonian American Art Museum) in Washington, D.C.". Thomas Moran (1837-1926) was an American painter and printmaker primarily of the Rocky Mountains and the West landscapes. His paintings are well known and inspire the beauty of the western landscape. He participated in the 1871 Hayden geological survey of Yellowstone as an artist. He also participated in the 1873 Powell geological survey of the Grand Canyon and Colorado River to add his artistic talent along with the photography of the landscapes. Dutton used Moran and Holmes to illustrate the Grand Canyon from an artistic interpretation (Moran) and a more scientific illustration (Holmes). This Book and Atlas uses the talent of both Moran and Holmes to tell the story and the beauty of the Grand Canyon,
