William Hemsley Emory (1811–1887) was an American surveyor, civil engineer, and military officer best known for his role in mapping the United States-Mexico border following the Mexican-American War. Graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1831, Emory initially served as a topographical engineer and quickly distinguished himself through his expertise in surveying and cartography. His most notable work came as the chief surveyor for the United States Boundary Commission, where he was tasked with delineating the new border established by the Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo in 1848 and later the Gadsden Purchase in 1853. Emory's detailed reports and maps were instrumental in shaping the development and settlement of the American Southwest, providing valuable geographic and scientific information about the region.
During the American Civil War, Emory served as a Union officer, commanding troops in several important campaigns and earning respect for his leadership and strategic skills. After the war, he continued his military career, eventually retiring with the rank of major general. Emory’s legacy endures through his meticulous documentation and contributions to American cartography, as well as his efforts to promote scientific exploration in the expanding nation. His work remains a resource for historians and geographers studying the 19th-century American frontier.
This book is Emory’s 1848 Senate report on the 1846-47 Military Reconnaissance of New Mexico and California from Fort Leavenworth, in Missouri, to San Diego, in California. The report includes the important map of the region and abbreviated reports by Lt. Abert, Colonel Cook and Captain Johnston.
The four maps are important in the detailing the Southern California battles and the survey of the route to California; No 1 – Sketch of the Actions Fought at San Pasqual, No. 2 – Sketch of the Passage of the Rio San Gabriel, No. 3 Sketch of the Battle of Los Angeles, and No. 4 – Large folding map of the Military Reconnaissance of the Arkansas Rio del Norte and Rio Santa Fe by Lt. J. W. Abert and W. G. Peck, and from Santa Fe to San Diego and the Pacific by Lt. W. H. Warner and Mr. Norman Bestor, Under Command of Brig. Gen., Stephen Kearny … orders of Col. J. J. Abert, Drawn by Joseph Welch, engraved by E. Weber and Co.
All of the illustrations were made by John Mix Stanley (1814-1872) a painter and illustrator of the American West. Stanley participated in many of the early surveys of the west and was part of the railroad surveys in the 1850's. In 1842, he began traveling and painting the Native Americans. In the Mexican -American war he was a draftsman in the U. S. Corps of Topographical Engineers under Colonel Kearny' expedition to California and Oregon. After the war, he was assigned to Emory's survey expeditions for the Mexican boundary and Gadsden purchase.
Edward Weber (_ - 1848) was a lithographer from Germany in the mid 1800's and patented a printing process for illustrations, maps, and charts. The company changed the name from Edward Weber and Co. to A. Hoen and Co. and continued to operate until 1981.
On front free end paper prior owner signature, " Arthur L. Thomas, Room No. 13, House of Representatives, Washington D.C., May 17th 1870". In 1870, Thomas was an assistant in the Office of the Clerk of the House [of Representatives] assigned to the Document Room. Room 13 was in the attic of the Capitol and used by the Library of Congress at the time. The personal signing of the book by Thomas may have been a result of the Library releasing surplus copies of the book due to limited space in the Capitol. In 1870, the Copyright Act required 2 copies of every copyrighted work to be held by the Library. On second free end paper, an older ink inscription "With the respects of the author" is assumed signed Emory at the time of issue and deposit in the Library of Congress.
This book belonged to Arthur Lloyd Thomas (1851–1924), a federal civil servant who served as Secretary of the Utah Territory beginning in 1879 and later as the 14th Territorial Governor of Utah from 1889 to 1893. Following his loss in Utah's inaugural gubernatorial election after statehood, he was appointed Postmaster of Utah, a position he held from 1898 to 1914. Thomas was an avid collector of literature on western expansion and exploration, with a particular interest in human development and the advancement of civilization, as noted by his great-granddaughter. Early in his collecting, Thomas inscribed his name by hand in his books; in later years, he used an ink stamp signature for identification.
