Raymond Lee Newcomb (1849-1918) was an American naturalist, taxidermist, artist, author, arctic explorer, and astronomer. He was selected by De Long as the Naturalist for the Jeannette expedition. He was one of the members of the boat, commanded by George Melville, which survived the escape and ordeal in the Lena Delta.

This book is one of Raymond Lee Newcomb’s most notable works. Using his journals and experiences, along with others, he provided one of the first published accounts of the Jeannette expedition that was trapped in the ice and sunk. The survivors divided into three boats to make their way to the settlements on the Lena River Delta in Siberia.

Newcomb published a variety of works that displayed his versatility and talent, ranging from fiction to essays that explored the human condition. His writing style was characterized by clarity and subtle humor, making his stories accessible to a wide audience. Newcomb’s contributions to literature were recognized by critics and readers alike, who praised his ability to create vivid characters and immersive settings.

Other well-known accounts were published in 1882 (Lt. Danenhower), 1884 (De Long’s journals by Emily De Long) and 1885 (George Melville, Engineer). In addition, there were many officials reports issued by the Navy, and hearings by the House and Senate.
