William Edward Webb (1838-1906) was an author, promoter, Kansas politician, railroad Agent and fossil collector. He was a member of a "semi-scientific party" of a mix of interesting people exploring and hunting on the great plains for several months in 1872. The book was intended as a hunting guild, however it is mostly a wide ranging western adventure story. Rittenhouse comments "A popular account of a trip across the plains in 1870's written for a general audience" and includes descriptions of Santa Fe Trail freighters at Hays City and the Arkansas river valley.

In Adam's Six-Guns, he writes "... an authentic account of the discoveries, adventures, and mishaps of a scientific and sporting party in the wild west: with graphic descriptions of the country .... replete with in formation, wit and humor. The appendix comprising a complete guide for the sportsmen and emigrants, ..." The book also contains material on Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill Cody. And, of course, there are the semi-fictional western stories about places and people. The book was popular and promotional for attracting settler to Kansas.

The bookplate of Alexander Ramsey Thomas (1883–1946) dates from the early 1900s. Thomas was an avid and long-standing book collector, continuing the bibliophilic tradition of his father, Arthur Lloyd Thomas (1851–1924). Arthur Lloyd Thomas served as the 14th Territorial Governor of Utah from 1889 to 1893 and, following an unsuccessful gubernatorial election, was appointed Utah Postmaster, serving from 1898 to 1914. He assembled a collection focused on western expansion, exploration, and the study of human development and civilization. Alexander Ramsey Thomas became an attorney and relocated to Mendocino County, California in 1913 to establish his law practice, later serving as an officer of the courts.
