This short book is a review of a 40 plus year controversy in the rescue of Nordenskjold and others by the Argentine crew of the Uruguay. The Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1901-04, led by Otto Nordenskjold (1869-1928), arranged with the Argentine government to relive the expedition if they did not return on schedule. The party was landed, explored and wintered over on Snow Hill Is. as planned. Captain Larsen of the Antarctic sailed to relieve the party, but ice blocked his way through the Antarctic Sound. He landed a party at Hope Bay to make their way over the ice to Snow Hill Is. Larsen then tried another route and was trapped in the ice the the ship wrecked. He and his crew abandoned ship and marched 25 miles over the sea ice to Paulet Is. and no one knew where they were stranded. Nordensjold's party prepared another winter on Snow Hill Is. and the Hope Bay party had returned to Hope Bay to spend an uncomfortable winter in improvised shelter. In early spring the Hope Bay party was able to reunite with the Snow Hill party and all were sure that the Antarctic was lost. The Uruguay , as promised by the Argentine government to relieve the expedition, was stopped by sea ice several miles from Snow Hill Is. and sent a small party to the Hut. At the same time, Larsen set out with a small party from Paulet Is. in a small boat to Hope Bay, then traveled over the ice to Snow Hill Is. and arrived the same evening as the officers from the Uruguay.
Once all parties were picked up by the Uruguay, the ship was caught in a sever storm in the Drake Passage between the Antarctic Peninsula and South America. From the Preface, "... two of the ship's three masts were severely damaged. What transpired between the Swedish and Argentinean staffs in that predicament became a matter of controversy and pride for the Argentineans."
All of the primary sources are in Spanish and Swedish and are translated, for the first time, in the appendices.
