The illustration is by Alfred R. Waud (1828-1891), an illustrator for Harper's Weekly. The magazine sent Waud to the South in April 1866 to report on the results of the Civil War conclusion. Waud proceeded down the Mississippi Valley to Louisiana and Texas to sketch the damage and the recovery from the war. Waud also contributed to Picturesque America in 1872.
The illustration captures a scene from the historic cattle drives of the post-Civil War era in the American West.
