Emma Hart Willard (1787–1870) was an author, cartographer, and pioneering American educator and women's rights advocate who revolutionized female education. Frustrated by the lack of academic rigor for women, she established the Troy Female Seminary in 1821 in New York, the first school of higher education for women in the United States. She championed the idea that women deserved an education equal to men, covering subjects like math, science, and history. A prolific author and advocate, Willard also authored textbooks and influenced the creation of public schools for women, significantly impacting American education and the early women’s rights movement. She wrote history and geography text books and produced related maps throughout her career.

This book was first published by George P. Putnam in 1849 and was a supplement to her history textbooks covering current events of the Mexican-American war and California. This 1853 edition is an expanded version of the Putnam edition with additional information on California.

The book is in three parts with margin annotations. Part one covers the political lead up and the Mexican-American war. Part two is the history of California. Part three discusses the organization of the western territories and several international events of the time.
